To kick off the month long festivity the NAHCC will host a reception at South Area Business Council beautification award winner Los Arcos Mexican Restaurant (3798 Nolensville Road Nashville, TN 37211) on Tuesday September 15th the official day in which Hispanic Heritage Month begins.

Enjoy delicious antojitos mexicanos, traditional drinks and wonderful music in the company of NAHCC members, corporate sponsors, partners and guests.

Hispanic Heritage Month was first instituted in 1968 by the US Congress, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed a week in September to be recognized as National Hispanic Heritage Week. The observance was expanded in 1988 to a month long celebration (Sept. 15-Oct. 15).

Public forums, festivals, lectures, art receptions, training/businesses breakout sessions are part of the NAHCC's month long Hispanic Heritage Month program. (full list here)

The NAHCC joins the nation in celebrating the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Sept. 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.

Recent Census data released for Hispanic Heritage Month indicates that the population of Hispanics in the U.S has reached over 45.5 million.

To nominate someone who has demonstrated commitment and leadership to the Hispanic community to be a recipient of a 2009 Business Hispanic Heritage Award, please contact Loraine Segovia at:
