The Tennessean reports here that the Southern Poverty Law Center "found 35 active hate group chapters in the state in 2006." That makes Tennessee the sixth most popular state for such groups."At least 12 of the 35 groups in the state are based in Middle Tennessee, according to the center, a non-profit civil rights organization."
"Overall, the 844 hate groups in the country marked a 5 percent increase from the 2005 list. Hate groups have increased 40 percent in the United States since 2000, according to the study."
